With a prepaid sim card Costa Rica from Airport Telecom, you can be reached throughout Costa Rica on one phone number. Moreover, you will have 12GB or 30GB of data. So these cards are great for internet use. However, please note that while you can receive incoming phone calls in Costa Rica with these prepaid SIM cards, you cannot make normal outgoing phone calls with them. All calls that run through the internet such as with Whatsapp, Skype, Facetime etc. are of course possible. After all, you are then using the data bundle on the SIM card.

Internet and calling while traveling in Costa Rica

The phone number of the prepaid sim card on which you will be reachable in Costa Rica will be sent to you by SMS after activation of the sim. It is an English (+44) number. We chose this because the sim in question offers a very good data bundle in Costa Rica and uses the largest Costa Rican mobile networks. Moreover, this sim card does not require user registration in Costa Rica.

Whatsapp with sim card Costa Rica

Whatsapp you can continue to use with your own existing contacts, groups and chats. After inserting a prepaid sim card, Whatsapp may ask if you want to create a new identity or if everything should stay as it was. If so, choose the latter and nothing will change. You can then continue to send messages and make calls with Whatsapp as usual.

Coverage in Costa Rica

The SIM cards of Airport Telecom offer excellent coverage in Costa Rica. Just keep in mind that a quarter of the country consists of natural parks and protected tropical rainforest. This is good to protect the unique flora and fauna but there is no good cell phone coverage in these jungle areas. However, there are of course beautiful places to explore here such as the Monteverde rainforest and the Arenal volcano. Mobile data coverage in Costa Rica is especially good in the capital San Jose, in La Fortuna and in other cities and places inland and on the coast.

How do I install the Costa Rica SIM card in my phone?

Open the slider on the side of the phone. You can do this with the pin that came with the phone. If you don’t have this you can make one by bending a paper clip. Airport Telecom sim cards also come with an extra pin.

Remove your own sim card and keep it safe! Now insert the new SIM card. There is only one way to do this. You may have a phone that can hold more than one SIM card. Insert the new SIM card as an extra card.

Push the SIM card slide back into the phone now. If all goes well, you can now automatically use the new sim. The phone may ask you to do some additional settings.

Which SIM card to use in Costa Rica?

For a short stay of a few days, you probably won't need that much data. The 10GB data bundle for Costa Rica may then be sufficient. Applications such as Whatsapp, Instagram and navigation do not consume much data. If you are staying longer, it may be useful to choose Unlimited so you will definitely have enough data. The Unlimited sim card also offers unlimited calls within Costa Rica.
